An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) is a certificate that indicates how much energy is being used to operate a building, and is indicated through a performance scale of A-G.
The EPC is valid for 5 years.
In 2020, The Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy has, under section 19(1)(b) of the National Energy Act, 1998 (Act no. 34 of 2008), set out regulations that an EPC is required to be publicly displayed at the entrance of all buildings that fall into the criteria for compliance.
Buildings in the private sector that are over 2000m2 and buildings that are over 1000m2 in the public sector are now required to display an EPC at their entrance.
Penalties for non-compliance are defined as, a 5 million rand fine, five years imprisonment or both should an organization not comply with the legislation by the December 2025 deadline..
The EPC may only be issued by a SANEDI Registered Professional or a SANAS Inspection Body.
EPCs for buildings are issued in accordance with the South African National Standard SANS 1544:2014.
IT IS ESTIMATED THAT THERE ARE MORE THAN 250 000 BUILDINGS THAT WILL REQUIRE AN EPC BEFORE THE 2025 DEADLINE.
DON’T GET CAUGHT UP IN THE LAST-MINUTE RUSH BEFORE THE DEADLINE.
